ARFLI Draft Cup
The SMATS.NET ARFLI Draft Cup is a new competition for 2010 aimed at providing full field 18-A-Side Football for our members. The Draft Cup will also act as a trial process for the selection of domestically based players on the Irish Warriors National Team. This year the Warriors will compete in the inaugural European Championships in Denmark & Sweden and in 2011 the team will compete in the fourth AFL International Cup in Australia. The Draft Cup is open to players from all ARFLI Clubs irrespective of nationality and is also open to players who would like to try Aussie Rules but do not have the time to commit to a Premiership Club. All players wanting to participate must first register for the competition by completing the Draft Cup Registration in our Player Registration section. When all players have been registered a specific number of 22 man squads will be determined with players assigned to each team by a draw. All players will be graded into subsections on the basis of experience and ability to ensure that the teams are as even as possible. There will be six rounds of games in the draft Cup between March and July. If you are interested in participating please register now by completing the Draft Cup Registration form in the player registration section of the site.
This Year's domestic season commences on March 6th, with the first round of the inaugural Smats.net Draft Cup. This is a new competition and it is essential that all players wishing to take part register before March 1st to be eligible for the first round. We've already had a great deal of interest in the competition, but in case you still don't know about it, we've answered some of your questions. What is the Purpose of the Draft Cup? The Draft Cup serves three purposes. Firstly it provides full format eighteen a side football for our members. Secondly it acts as a trial process for National Team Players and thirdly it offers players who do not have the time to commit to a Premiership Club the chance to play Australian Football. Who Can Play, is it just for Players aiming to play for the National Team? No the Draft Cup is open to everyone over the age of 18 Years Old who wants to play Australian Football. It is open to Irish, Australians, League Members, non-members and those just passing through. How Does it Work? The idea of the Cup is that it will be competed for by teams of equal strength, so in order to do that we ask that all players pre-register so that we can gauge the level of interest and the number of teams we will have. We aim to have 24 Players per team, so depending on the level of interest we expect there to be 2 or 3 teams. These teams will be selected by placing the names of different players in bowls according to their levels of ability or experience. Coaches will be appointed to each team and they will draw the players for their respective teams from the bowls. These will then be the teams for the duration of the Cup. How Many Rounds Are There and where will it be played? There are six rounds in the Draft Cup, two in March; 1 in April; 1 in May; 1 in June and 1 in July. All rounds will take place at St.Davids College, Artane. How Will It Affect National Team Selection For The European Championships? Players who wish to be considered for the National Team this year must have played two of the first four rounds to be considered for the squad which will travel to Denmark & Sweden. The Squad will be announced after Round 4 and once announced they will be expected to compete in the last two rounds prior to departure to the Championships. Can I Play After The Registration Deadline? Yes, you can play after the deadline but you will not be guaranteed a high position on your team roster. By registering prior to March 1st you guarantee a greater role in the team. How Do I Register? The only way to register for the Draft Cup is by filling out the online registration form on this website. You can either go to the Player Registration section of the website and fill out the form - or simply click on the link below which will take you straight to it.
